Final design, 1837-1840

Architectural drawings by C.R. Cockerell

The foundation stone for the north wing was laid in September 1837, and, characteristically for Cockerell, revision of the details of the design continued throughout the construction process. Ultimately only this wing was ever built; the medieval Old Schools remain in place behind the screen of 1754 by Stephen Wright. From 1840 the upper floor of the north wing served as the university library, with the Woodwardian Museum of Geology below. In 1934 the library moved to the present location, and following occupation by the law faculty Cockerell’s building now serves as the library of Gonville and Caius College. The interior has been extensively remodelled, however, and a large entranceway has been added to the main facade.
