C.R Cockerell and assistants, 1837-8
Pen and wash
MS Add.9272/2/2

The design for the library and schools was mostly known to the public from a woodcut that appeared in 1840 in the British Almanac of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge . That was based on the final version of the design and probably from the set of presentation drawings produced in 1837-8 by Cockerell’s studio. These recorded the final version, incorporating minor changes, including those made during the watercolour studies. The drawings are plain documentary records, with either a single plan or elevation per page, and no detail.
