Escenas grotescas contemporaneas – Pliego 2º

Grotesque contemporary scenes

Madrid: Despacho Hernando, [1860-1900?]

This selection of grotesque images is presented as a mockery of contemporary characters and their activities, intended to amuse rather than educate (as was the intention of the aleluyas elsewhere in this exhibition). It can probably be dated to the the latter part of the nineteenth century, and possibly from the end of the reign of Isabel II, dethroned in 1868. The images in sections 4 and 32 are similar to those which appeared attacking her in the satirical press. There are also comments on contemporary fashion, with women wearing crinolines in sections 4 and 19, and a reference to homeopathy in section 13.
