Verdadera relacion de lo acaecido en la Ciudad de Lisboa, en casa de una Señora, natural de la Ciudad de Cadiz …

True tale of what happened in the City of Lisbon, in the house of a Lady, naïve of the city of Cadiz; having forgotten the many warnings God had sent her in the form of divers calamities, thus threatening her with the staff of his justice: we are told of how this Lady was immersed in vain pleasures and profane delights, and attracted many Gentlemen and Ladies to her house, so that they could enjoy themselves in the parties and evening gatherings that took place every night in her drawing room, imitating that scandalous ball of the Beautiful-Union; and one night as she stepped out to dance, she asked them to play and sing Cachirulo for her, and as she was dancing with the greatest of indecency, she said: among all those here, there can be no Devil ready to dance with me, and instantly God allowed one to appear before her, with the most horrible face as is shown in this image of him, so that all were afraid, horrified and contrite, and went to their homes, the Lady remaining in her home at the feast of the most Holy Christ of the Greatest Pain, asking Him to pardon her, and removing her finery, she dressed as a penitent, all of which should serve as an example for all so that they remove the dishonest songs from the tune of Cachirulo from their hearts.

Impreso en Cadiz con las licencias necesarias, [18–?]

This unusual single-page story is printed on the back page of a three-page ballad of a devotional nature, telling of the repentance of a sinful soul – a woman who regrets her frivolities. The woman depicted here, however, fails to follow this good example. When she boasts at a dance that no devil would be capable of dancing with her, come-uppance arrives quickly. The lengthy title explains “instantly God allowed one to appear before her, with the most horrible face as is shown in this image of him, so that all were afraid, horrified and contrite …” The devil is depicted as a mixture of human and animal, male and female.
