Dansa Macabra

Dance macabre

[No place of publication]: 1884

Unlike the other aleluyas on display this cartoon is a page extracted from a newspaper. It has not been possible to identify the journal, which includes on the reverse of this image an article on the distribution of money to the widows and orphans of the martyrs of Girona, soldiers who were executed for revolting against the Spanish Republic. The artist was a Catalan writer and illustrator and the careful drawing of some of the faces suggests some satire from Catalonia on politics of the Restoration period in Spain. The whole appears to be a version of the Dance macabre, in which death is both recalled, and rebutted in order to render it less frightening.
