This diagrammatic map of Waterloo at seven o’clock in the evening is taken from one of several biographies of Wellington that appeared in his own lifetime. North is to the bottom of the sheet, and unusually the Prussians are indicated with pink and Wellington’s Allied army with brown. The representation of the units by drawings of massed troops is reminiscent of battle plans of the seventeenth century. Both La Haye Sainte and Hougoumont are drawn as hamlets, rather than as the isolated complexes of agricultural and residential buildings which they were.
