Christian von Ompteda commanded a brigade in the centre of Wellington’s battle line. He was killed attempting to recapture La Haye Sainte at the crisis of the battle, after six o’clock. Publication of his memoirs in 1892 demonstrated ongoing interest in the battle, awareness of the role played by German troops in Wellington’s army, and respect for a gallant officer.
