Souvenir de Waterloo (1)

Souvenir de Waterloo
[Belgium?, 1880s?]
Waddleton.e.6.2, cover

This small book, devoid of any information regarding its compiler or publisher, contains twenty crudely-coloured plates showing sites on or near the battlefield, portraits of the principal commanders, and depictions of scenes from the battle. The inclusion of a version of Elizabeth Butler’s famous painting of the charge of the Scots Greys, ‘Scotland for Ever!’, first exhibited in 1881, provides an earliest possible date for its publication. It is easy to imagine the Souvenir being purchased by a British visitor to Waterloo, but it was not aimed specifically at an Anglophone market: the image captions, which are its only text, are in French.
