La Haye Sainte

Thomas Hartwell Horne (1780–1862)
The campaign of Waterloo, illustrated with engravings of Les Quatre Bras… and other principal scenes of action… together with a grand view of the battle on a large scale

Atlas.3.81.6

La Haye Sainte, at the centre-left of Wellington’s line, changed hands twice late in the day. In this view, looking towards the ridge on which the Allies were positioned, peace has returned and some early tourists view the scene from a coach. Uniformed soldiers appear to act as guides. Freshly-dug graves testify to the intense fighting at this point. But the artist emphasizes that life goes on: locals stand chatting, while two children gawp back at the viewer.
