Hougoumont

Thomas Hartwell Horne (1780–1862)
The campaign of Waterloo, illustrated with engravings of Les Quatre Bras… and other principal scenes of action… together with a grand view of the battle on a large scale
London: printed by T. Bensley and Son, for Robert Bowyer, 1816
Atlas.3.81.6

This coloured view shows one of the two key farms on the Waterloo battlefield. Belgian farmsteads, often enclosed by walls, offered useful strongpoints in a defensive battle-line. The French never seized Hougoumont, which in this 1816 engraving still shows signs of the recent battle.
