Charles Sayle (1864–1924)
Annals of Cambridge University Library 1278–1900
Cambridge: The University Library, 1916
Charles Sayle added numerous corrections and additional notes to his own interleaved copy of his history of the Library. The printed page on the left sums up the events surrounding the 1715 gift in two famous epigrams: the first, by Joseph Trapp (an Oxford man), was inspired by George’s suppression of a Jacobite uprising in Tory Oxford at the same time as the gift to Cambridge. William Browne of Peterhouse later replied in favour of the educated Whigs of his own university.
