Serge de Sazo (1915–2012), photograph

1944

In the final days of the liberation of Paris and during the Épuration, or Purge, that followed, women who were thought to have consorted with Germans had their heads shaved and were paraded semi-naked in towns and cities all over France. De Sazo has written on the back of this print, ‘26 août. Deux femmes qui avaient donné refuge aux tireurs allemands ont été tondues et promenées dans les rues de Paris. Photo prise rue de Rivoli’ (26 August. Two women who had sheltered German snipers have had their heads shaved and been marched through the streets of Paris. Photograph taken in the rue de Rivoli).
