Map of Cambridge

Explanatory drawing
C.R. Cockerell and assistants, 1831
Pen, blue and pink watercolour; pencil for routes, columns, sketched extension of St Johns College
40×23
MS Add.9272/4/2

This map of Cambridge with Cockerell’s design in pink is annotated in pencil. The annotations describe various lines of sight and approach, as well as the plan of New Court at St John’s College, under construction at the time by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson. In the pamphlet war of 1831 that followed the competition, Rickman and Hutchinson had accused Cockerell of plagiarising their own design. Here, their plan has been drawn in pencil on top of his, showing the discrepancy.
