For the elevation of the principal facade, Gibbs essentially repeated the facade of the Senate House with a hexastyle portico; Cockerell adapted this into a double portico with an open double staircase inside. He removed the replica Senate House to the south, but left open the possibility of it with a Doric stoa whose sculptured frieze was continued across the principal facade.
