Duncan Grant, 1909

This poster was one of the most popular of the suffrage campaign. The image of the young privileged man being propelled to parliament while the woman struggles with the oars and high seas is particularly compelling . Duncan Grant was a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group of British painters. He produced the poster for a competition organised by the  Artists’ Suffrage League; the poster came joint first.
