Vice and virtue: a little auca for children
Barcelona: Sucesor de Antonio Bosch, [1850–85]
Specifically written for children (an auquilla is a small auca, the Catalan term for aleluya), this publication emphasizes the virtue of hard work, rather than idleness. Unusually, the example of the one who behaves badly comes before that of the one who is obedient, and who therefore is rewarded. Vice is to do with lazy choices, represented by alcohol and giving in to desire, while virtue gets more than its own rewards, leading to prosperity and public recognition.
