The first three days of fighting at the Battle of Leipzig took place in villages surrounding the city: there were engagements at Markkleeberg, Wachau, Liebertwolkwitz, Möckern, Probstheida and elsewhere. Only on the last day, 19 October, as Napoleon was attempting to extricate his army westwards, did Coalition forces enter Leipzig itself, where a French rear-guard action caused great bloodshed in the streets of the city.
