Monuments on the field

‘Omnium Gatherum’ [Michael Egerton]
Here and there over the water: being cullings in a trip to the Netherlands…
London: George Hunt, 1825
Harley-Mason.b.135, plate opposite p. 25

Egerton visited Waterloo during a sight-seeing trip to the Netherlands in the 1820s, and published engravings of several sketches of the battlefield and locations nearby. This image shows the railed-off monument to Sir Alexander Gordon (1786–1815), Wellington’s chief aide-de-camp, whom the Duke described in his despatch of 19 June 1815 as ‘a most promising officer, and… a serious loss to His Majesty’s service’. To the left, on the other side of the road between Brussels and Charleroi, is the monument to the men of the King’s German Legion killed in the battle. A roof-top of the farm of La Haye Sainte, which was defended by soldiers of the Legion, is visible on the right of the picture.
