A pyre at Hougoumont

Lib.3.81.21, plate XVIII (Q)

For the subject of this plate, James Rouse turned aside from the main road between Brussels and Charleroi to depict the farm complex at Hougoumont. The slaughter in the fields around the walls of Hougoumont was particularly terrible; the French assaults on the position continued almost throughout the entire battle, and occupied upwards of 13,000 men of the French II Corps. The print is captioned ‘Where the dead were buried after the battle’, although the image clearly shows preparations for the other means of disposing of bodies, burning on a pyre.
