A Letter from Elizabeth Newell to John Moore
Moore’s reputation as a helper of the poor and the sick was widely known. This letter is an example of the requests made of him by parishoners and others.
My Lord
I humbly begg your Lordships pardon for this trouble but the Character of your hospitality to the poor in bestowing medicams to those in necessity encourages me to hope for the same favour that your Lordship out of your goodness has been pleased to bestow upon many others that are fallen under the same misfortunes as I am. I am a poor woman that has my husband in the Queen servis and four children for to worke for but the Lord has used me with pain and sickness it lie in my back and kidnes that I cant rest night nor day for pane and some time in my grine [groin] for this 3 weeke. I being a poor woman withall humbly bege your Lordship will be pleased to consider the same to extend your advice with as fit hearin and I shall in duty bound eere for to pray. I am my Lordships most dutyfulll and humbill servant Elizabeth Newell.
