The Bishops’ home

Henry William Brewer (1836-1903)
Old London illustrated … illustrating London in the XVIth century
London, 1921

Ely Palace was the London home of the Bishops of Ely, shown here in a depiction of how it was believed to appear in the sixteenth century. The cloisters, which housed Moore’s library, is in the centre of the image. The building itself was allowed to fall into disrepair in the eighteenth century, though the chapel, St Etheldreda’s (after the seventh-century princess and saint of Ely) survives as a church to the present day.
