The centre of Cambridge unchanged

William Combe (1742-1823)
A history of the University of Cambridge
London: R. Ackermann, 1815

Ackermann’s famous history of Cambridge, with his distinctive aquatint plates, presents the Senate House and the front of the Old Schools in a state that would be recognised as virtually unchanged to the present day. The Senate House matches closely to James Gibbs’s 1722 drawing, though the remainder of his ambitious plan was never completed.
