Madeleine Legrand, À Fresnes: témoignage précédé d’un poème de Paul Éluard; hors texte de Valentine Hugo

Paris: Éditions Stock, 1944

Legrand was arrested by the Gestapo and spent two months in Fresnes prison. Her husband Jean (1910–1982) was accused of distributing Communist leaflets. She was later released. The book includes the poem ‘D’un seul poème entre la vie et la mort’ by Paul Éluard, dedicated ‘à Jean, maintenant sauvé’ (‘To Jean, now saved’), and this frontispiece by the Surrealist artist Valentine Hugo (1869–1951). The book was prepared during the Occupation but printed for the Liberation, on 31 August 1944.
