Taslitzky, an artist who had joined the French Communist Party in 1935, was arrested and deported to Buchenwald in July 1944. His drawings include sketches of life in the camp and six formal portraits. This portrait of Émile Chevalier was made on 31 December 1944; it is not known if Chevalier survived.
