Frohe Fahrt

Pop-up books straddle the line between books and objects. This charming German book, whose title means ‘happy journey’, uses three dimensional scenes to depict the progress of the various means of transport: aeroplanes, boats, racing cars and even a Zeppelin. Its light and carefree tone contrasts with the tense situation in Germany and Europe at the time of its publication. The typeface, however, it is very much of its time: the text is printed in Sütterlin, a handwriting script that was taught in all German schools from 1935 to 1941.
