Pony hair

Frank Chance (1826–1897)
Enclosure of pony hair
London, 31 July–7 August 1873
MS DAR 142: 59–60

In response to a statement Darwin made about domestic horses in Siberia (Descent, vol. 1, pp. 298–9), Frank Chance enclosed these samples of hair from a Northamptonshire pony’s body, mane and tail to show how the pony’s coat became lighter in winter.
