For the sake of completeness of evidence, Darwin included an account of ‘two gentlemen’ who ‘have lately written to me, saying that they form an exception to the rule’ in the second edition of Descent; this lightly annotated copy was also owned by Darwin. However, on the basis of their statements he concluded: ‘the exceptions were very rare’.
