Audley End, Essex

‘Audley End’ in Richard, Lord Braybrooke, The History of Audley End: to which are appended Notices of the Town and Parish of Saffron Walden in the County of Essex. London: S. Bentley, 1836

The popularity of house histories endured long into the nineteenth century. Although tastes in landscape evolved, Brown’s skill in exploiting natural features remained a subject of admiration. His masterful use of water was frequently commended, as Braybrooke demonstrates: ‘The river Cam, which divides the lawns, forms a broad stream in front of the house, having been widened many years ago under the auspices of Brown, the landscape gardener’.
