The science of phrenology studied the relationships between a person’s character and the morphology of the skull. It was phenomenally popular in 19th century Britain as a form of popular entertainment similar to palmistry. The illustration here makes a rather bizarre comparison of the head of Prince Albert with that of a gorilla. The author claims that the ‘nobility of expression’ exemplified by Prince Albert shows the moral nature which is peculiar to humans, in contrast to the ‘animal’ nature of the gorilla.
