“I have shot my old uncle this morning; the old man has been ruining me and now I have ruined him”: so Charles Street was quoted in The Times report of 23 March 1875. Money was at the root of this family quarrel: Street was a man of 20 who expected to inherit his great uncle’s money, and was shocked when he instead threatened to put him in the County Court for non-payment of a borrowed one shilling and sixpence. Street was found guilty of murder but ultimately reprieved, on evidence submitted by other members of his family that he suffered from epilepsy and confusion.
