Barcelona: Imprenta de los herederos de Juan Jolis [1740–78?]
This rather stately image of a lion and a decorous couple reflects the elegant verse account, which tells how the lady in question eloped at age fifteen, only to be attacked by her lover. The lion’s reward for looking after the lady for three years is that he is killed by her ‘rescuer’, who later marries her, perhaps represented by the right-hand image. The two images have been selected by the printer to give a rough indication of the content of the ballad; these tales often bear such approximate images.
