XIV.26.77 pp. 38–39
From the time of his early campaigns in Italy, Napoleon put the appropriation of art treasures from his vanquished opponents on an official footing; the Apollo Belvedere, seized from the Vatican, was only his best-known prize among many. In October 1807, to mark the first anniversary of the Battle of Jena, an exhibition was held at the Musée Napoléon in Paris to display artworks looted from the continental powers defeated in the War of the Fourth Coalition. This catalogue sold for a franc. The opening here gives details of works by two Brueghels and Canaletto.
