This outpouring of resolve-stiffening patriotic fervour does what it set out to do in the title. Through the pages that follow, the ‘Merchants, Bankers, Traders, and other inhabitants’ of London assemble and pass loyal resolutions ‘to stand or fall with our King and Country’. Merchants and underwriters set up a general subscription to raise money for the defence of the realm, while a Patriotic Fund draws in contributions from ‘the women of England’. One of the stirring addresses is by the celebrated Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
