This engraving by George Cruikshank shows Napoleon, still astride his grey Arab stallion Marengo, being guided away from the battlefield by Jean Baptiste Decoster (for more information on Decoster, see the theme ‘“An eye-witness of the very spot”: Waterloo’s tourists’). Napoleon’s first, brief refuge was the farm at Le Caillou where he had spent the previous night, and it may have been here that he boarded the carriage.
