The text of this account of Napoleon’s journey to Elba, printed in Ludwig von Waldburg’s Voyage de Napoléon, is based on the narrative of the Austrian officer Franz von Koller (1767–1826), who accompanied Napoleon from Fontainebleau to Elba. During parts of the journey, Napoleon wore Koller’s uniform to disguise himself from disaffected elements of the population in France.
