Napoleon’s battlefield commander at Waterloo, Michel Ney, was executed by a French firing squad on 7 December 1815, following a trial by his peers. He died bravely, giving his executioners the order to fire, and was buried the next day in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. For some, Ney was a scapegoat, put to death by way of an example to his erstwhile colleagues. Napoleon’s other surviving senior officers escaped such savage retribution, and most eventually made their peace with the restored monarchy.
