Ambroise Paré, Opera, Paris: J. Dupuys, 1582, translated into Latin by Jacques Guillemeau, p. 175, woodcut, leaf height 35 cm, K.7.29.
The images in the section on anatomy in this book were taken from Vesalius. A to H indicate the carpal bones, and I to L the metacarpal bones. While Vesalius only marked the phalanges of the thumb and the index finger in the corresponding image, in Paré’s woodcut, bones in all the fingers are labeled, thus, N to R show the ‘first phalanges of the fingers’, S to Y the ‘second’ and 1 to 5 the ‘last’. The rare anomalous ossicle under the little finger (os vesalianum carpi) is copied in the image, but not discussed here. This is typical of the way images from the Fabrica are used here in Paré’s work that engages with fewer details.
