Andreas Vesalius, De humani corporis fabrica libri septem, Basel: J. Oporinus, 1555, p. 205, woodcut, leaf height 43 cm, N*.1.1(A),.
This copy of the 1555 edition was once owned by Thomas Lorkyn (c.1528-1591), regius professor of physic in the University of Cambridge.
This shows how Lorkyn has used the skeletal image to make cross-references to the text that discussed those structures. While the text used internal margins to the text to refer back to the images, the images did not guide the reader to the relevant commentaries in the text. This was Lorkyn’s way of finding his way through the Fabrica.
