Johann Dryander, Anatomiae, hoc est, Corporis humani dissectionis pars prior, Marburg: E. Cervicornum, 1537, g [1] recto, woodcut, leaf height, 19.3 cm, 5000.d.70.
This woodcut shows the skull and the vertebrae propped up by an hour glass, another symbol of death, a message further confirmed by the inscription on the side of the board on which the skull rests, ‘inescapable fate’ (inevitabile fatum). The monogram of G intertwined with a compass (possibly an attribute of St Thomas) has led scholars to surmise that this is the signature of a woodcutter Georg Thomas of Basel.
