The vibrant mid-tone of the yellow stain or dye has the effect of providing woodcuts with a distinctive colouristic effect, as in this image of St Paul writing an epistle, but it was not added for this purpose; this opening indicates, the same colour was applied to hundreds of pages of unillustrated text in the volume.
