An exceptional binding

Otto Brunfels (1488–1534)
Iatrion medicamentorum simplicium
[Strasbourg: 1533]

Most of Moore’s books are in simple functional bindings, as his interests lay in the texts and the beauty of the printed or written page. This volume of medical remedies would be a case in point; its stunning contemporary binding was not Moore’s primary reason for purchasing the volume, but fortunately it survives almost intact after nearly 500 years. The front panel shows the Annunciation, with the English binder A.H.’s initials in the pavement below Mary’s feet. The rear of the binding bears a Tudor Rose.
