Thomas, Roman de Horn
England, c. 1170
University Library, MS Add. 4407(1)
England?, late thirteenth century
Vellum, 42 x 163 mm (25 x 140 mm), and 45 x 128 mm (3 x 112 mm), two fragments
This is one of two further Horn fragments, this time from a single manuscript folio. Like the Horn flyleaves, these two fragments postdate the English adaptation of Horn, written around 1225 (making it one of the very earliest literary works in English). This intriguingly highlights how even as late as the fourteenth century, texts about English heroes available in an English version continued to be copied in French. This fragment was found in the University Library in 1906.
