Gaston Paris
Note accompanying MS Add. 6220(7)
Cambridge, not dated
This note from the nineteenth-century romance philologist Gaston Paris (Avenay, 1839–Cannes, 1903) accompanies the fragment of the Vœux du Paon, explaining its content, suggesting a date and location for it, and highlighting the archaism of the language of the copy. In reading it, it is useful to remind ourselves that we are in the process of casting a twenty-first-century eye over a nineteenth-century note describing a fourteenth century manuscript recounting a legend from the fourth century B.C.!
