An early donation that survives

Boethius (d. 524)
De consolatione philosophiae with English translation by Geoffrey Chaucer
ca 1400

Most of the manuscripts listed in the 1424 catalogue are now lost, but a handful remain, providing a direct line back to the University Library’s earliest benefactors. This illuminated manuscript of Boethius was the gift of John Croucher of Gonville Hall (later Gonville and Caius College); he was later Dean of Chichester Cathedral.
MS Ii.3.21, ff. 107v–108r
