Paris: Éditions G. P., [1944]–1945

A ‘bande dessinée’ (comic strip) conceived during the Occupation but whose second volume, shown here, was not published until June 1945. In Edmond-François Calvo’s (1892–1958) illustrations the Germans are ‘loups’ (wolves), the French are ‘lapins’ (rabbits) and ‘cigognes’ (storks), the English ‘dogs’ (bulldogs), the Americans ‘bisons’, the Russians ‘ours’ (bears). In the top right-hand corner Roosevelt, ‘Élu des Bisons’, and Churchill, ‘Premier des Dogs’, confer in Casablanca. In the bottom right-hand corner are the long legs of de Gaulle, ‘notre Grande Cigogne’. Hitler, not shown here, is the ‘Grand Loup toujours en fureur’ (a pun on ‘Führer’).
