‘Retour des déportés’ (return of the exiles): around one million French prisoners did not return to France until after the end of the war in May 1945; the shame of ‘Les tondus inconnus’ (the shaven headed unknowns) was mirrored by ‘les femmes tondues’ (the shaven headed women), who were punished for their collaboration with the Germans.
