A treatise on diamonds and precious stones, 1813

John Mawe (1764–1829)

This is a guide to identifying and determining the value of mineral specimens. Mawe was a mineralogist specialising in precious stones. In 1804, he travelled to Brazil to assess the gold and diamond industries on behalf of the Prince Regent of Portugal. When he returned in 1811 he set up a mineralogical shop in the Strand selling minerals, philosophical instruments, chemicals for mineral analysis, and publications on the practical uses of mineralogy.
