George Julius Poulett Scrope

Educated at Cambridge, Scrope became interested in geology under the influence of Edward Daniel Clarke and Adam Sedgwick. His fascination with volcanoes was solidified after a trip to Naples enabled him to explore Mount Vesuvius. This 360° view of the ancient lava fields in central France traces the layering effect of volcanic emissions and the resulting changes of the landscape. As a close friend of Charles Lyell, Scrope believed that natural forces observed in the present –– such as volcanic eruptions –– were the same forces that shaped formations of the past.
