Zeichen der falschen Gulden

[Augsburg: Anton Sorg, 1482]

This is one of eleven similar broadsides printed across the Holy Roman Empire in 1482, following the execution by burning of a prolific counterfeiter of coins in Göttingen. The haul of coins seized was so large – the text cites four tons – and so many counterfeit coins were already in circulation that broadsides were printed in many cities to alert local merchants to the five types of false coins. Despite being produced in large numbers and distributed widely, few examples of these broadsides survive.
