A popular legend, oil and soap (2)

The adventures of Don Quixote, adapted for young readers, and illutrated with coloured pictures. London: W. Swan Sonnenschein & Co., [1880?]. Classmark: Waddleton.b.9.1329

Don Quixote clearly stands now as a popular hero. This is a 32 pages magazine-like version of the story with six colour illustrations showing key emblematic or action points of the plot. Affordable fiction was now at hand for the newly-instructed classes.

The end papers feature adverts of the publisher’s other titles (gift books at three shillings and sixpence and “illustrated fairy tales of all nations”) next to publicity for macassar oil for children’s hair, Wright’s coal tar soap and an insect destroying powder.
